How to recognize domestic violence

On Behalf of | Feb 15, 2025 | Domestic Violence |

Domestic violence is characterized by psychological and emotional manipulation, which can make victims feel scared and confused. A cluster of symptoms typically indicates a person’s vulnerability to domestic violence. This is because the problem is multifaceted and impacts both the physical and mental health of victims.

The victim is often in disbelief that a person they love and trust could harm them, yet that’s exactly what happens. In an abusive relationship, one partner uses threats and other forms of control to maintain their position of authority over the other. At first, the abuser may seem kind and protective, but eventually, their presence may become overwhelming and even terrifying.

How domestic violence begins in a relationship

Domestic violence and abuse usually sneak up on the victim. Initially, the occurrences are infrequent, which may lead the victim to question whether they are imagining it. However, intense and regular abuse is possible after a period of less frequent occurrences.

Signs of physical abuse

Acts of physical abuse, such as punching, choking or shoving the victim down the stairs often lead to visible injuries. The victim may give a nonsensical or far-fetched explanation if you ask them about their injury. This is because, despite everything, they are protecting their abuser.

Signs of emotional abuse

The primary goal of most forms of emotional abuse is to gain power and control over the victim. Both in private and in public, the abuser may mock you. Some people may use derogatory language or tell you that you are a failure. The victim may begin to believe these statements after hearing them often enough.

It is important to remember that a good relationship does not thrive in an environment of fear. Keep these warning signs in mind as you evaluate your relationship if you are experiencing domestic violence or abuse. Then, seek assistance to end the cycle.
